Working Mums; an introduction to Boxwood

Updated: Feb 21, 2021

Women are amazing.

I never truly understood that I was part of that gang; until I became a mum for the first time.

My baby was only 3 months old when I joined Charlotte (the other half of Boxwood) to launch our floristry business; all during a global pandemic.

Charlotte, another amazing woman, has 2 children under the age of 5 and, at the time, was finishing her last year in a Visual Communications degree.

Are we totally mad?

Absolutely not.

We are determined young mums, desperate to let our creative juices flow, and make a successful career for ourselves. More importantly, we want to make our children proud and understand that you can achieve anything you put your mind to when you really give your all.

Now, we're definitely not saying anything about this has been easy. Quite the contrary. It’s been the most challenging thing either of us could ever do whilst juggling so many balls. However, we are extremely fortunate to have some incredible support behind us; in the form of family, friends and very loyal customers. It's really true that if you surround yourself with good people, you’ll always reap the benefits.

Both of us have, and always had, a passion for floristry. Charlotte had a business after completing a course in the subject, however after becoming a mum and starting her degree, she made the hard decision to step away from it. In her heart, she always knew she would come back to it as she loved it so much. It was just a matter of timing and the right circumstances.

Over the years, I have worked with many florists, learnt as much as I could along the way as well as being self taught. It had always been a passion of mine and so I immersed myself into it and knew I wanted to make it my career one day.

Creativity is something that has always come naturally to both myself and Charlotte, and being mums together helped us solidify our friendship. It made so much sense to join together, and we knew that whatever happened we were mums that could stick together and have each other’s backs. We have been able to really support each other in our learning and development in all areas of running our business; and the fact that we have the same style and taste was pure luck!

After a crazy day at work, or weekend - flashback to our first Valentine's season, there’s nothing better than coming home to your gorgeous children and getting the biggest cuddle from them. It really does make you realise that what you are doing is all for them, and every second is so worth it!!

This upcoming mother's day, let's all remember the women that nurtured our growth and loved us. Not all superheroes wear capes - sometimes they wear oversized loungewear covered in food, sick and something sticky that is yet to be identified....
